Matlacha Pass is an excellent location to go fishing for redfish and snook at any time of the year. However, some species such as a black grouper, sheepshead, red grouper, gag grouper, Florida pompano are best caught in winter months. Grouper, permit, mutton, tripletail, goliath grouper, yellowtail snapper, ladyfish, cobia and mangrove snapper are most active from summer to fall months.
Matlacha Pass offers excellent fishing from June through September. Early morning is the best time.
The peak for redfish is between March to May. It is good to use live baits and light tackle lures. Fly fishing is effective here.
Due to water clarity fish will mostly hide in creeks and potholes.
